THE UNICORN IN SNOWPANTS SUDDENLY RAN OFF

This is perhaps the film that has felt most resonant for me so far. Working with Martha, Mia and Julian was a true joy, as well as stimulating and meaningful creatively. I learned here that there is a lot to explore cinematically about childhood - a theme I'll be revisiting.

My interest in blindness had twofold origin: my readings on perception during my undergrad in philosophy. And conversations with my grandmother, who had turned blind in old age, but for a long time refused to accept that reality, having grown up during the Nazi era, when disability was a taboo.

The film's reception has also been joy. It was licensed by The New Yorker Documentary, longlisted for the Academy Award in Short Documentary, nominated for the IDA Award and the German Film Critic's Award and won the Slamdance Grand Jury Prize. It was also shown in cultural institutions in 25+ countries as part of AG Kurzfilm's "Short Export" and at 20+ Filmfestivals.

“The Unicorn in Snowpants Suddenly Ran Off” explores three blind children's play worlds and the realities they live in. The film introduces us to three confident children, for whom blindness is not a disability but rather a different kind of normality. Unicorns, call centers and flying grandfathers each play a role.
