EASTKIDS is the feature film following in the tracks of CHEMKIDS, Jules and my first short film set in Chemnitz. The film is ambitious: it sets out to be what Jules calls a "city symphony", a cacophony of moments, voices and images from the lives of Chemnitzers - extreme left and extreme right of the political spectrum, young and old, hopeful and hopeless. This time, we worked with a larger team of at least four, sometimes up to seven crew members on set at a time. I switched from handheld and tripod on the short to a dolly (!) and a jib arm for EASTKIDS, to allow more cinematic, flowing movement while still maintaining a large degree of flexibility. While an unusual setup for a documentary, I found working in this more settled way quite freeing: I layed out the dolly tracks around what we thought would be a location's main axis and once they were set,  the camera moved up and down and back and forth for hours on end, eventually becoming increasingly invisible to the protagonists.

EASTKIDS is a co-production of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and ZDF Kleines Fernsehspiel. As of May 2026, the film is still in post production and is looking at a release in early 2027.
