TERMINAL 3
When my high school friend Asad called to say he needed someone with a practice of documentary filmmaking on his team, I got on the plane to Los Angeles without asking many more questions. Asad and his technical team built a pioneering AR experience that forces the viewer into the shoes of a US customs officer interviewing muslim-read travelers. The UI gives the choice of a more personal and a more security focused question. My job was to provide the reality to plug into this technical abstraction. I lead interviews with real people that were recorded using a 3d-capture technique powered by Depthkit, making humans into holograms. Together with writer Viva Wittmann we then formed the interviews into branching narratives, with the viewer deciding what would happen next. Work on this project had a raw, tech startup-esque quality to it, with all of us being young and in LA for the first time. Asad's leadership held it all together through many sleepless nights, and we were exhilarated to premiere Terminal 3 to critical acclaim at Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in 2017.
TERMINAL 3 is an interactive, augmented-reality documentary that explores contemporary Muslim identities in the U.S. through the lens of an airport interrogation. As viewers put on the Hololens, they step into the uncanny to directly interrogate, and determine the fate of, the hologram passenger before them. These interrogations become strikingly personal encounters that only end when the participant decides if the hologram should be let into the country or not—but there is a twist.
